Protecting Your Mental Health through Spirituality and Faith

"And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God." Romans 12:2

Often times and throughout our current society we have almost segregated Mental Health from the belief in a Higher Power. To do this is insanity. I often sit and enjoy nature and created things and how it reveals the presence of a Creative Source, thinking to myself, "How can we deny such a source from and in the workings of us?”

A car without its brain (engine) cannot fulfil its functions, yet even with its engine in place, still becomes useless unless someone is available and capable of turning its ignition. So too, our Minds can be compared to a car; we become zombies without the Creative Source to guide and renew our minds. When this does not take place we are but shadows.

In my search to discover ME, I find at my core the presence of a Creator, waiting almost impatiently to reveal and revolutionize the way in which I, WE think... and it is through our mental processes of which He clearly states, "Be ye not conformed, but rather transform your minds by renewal through His words”. For then, and only then, will you be able to prove/know what is that good and acceptable and perfect will.

Renew Your Mind:

Quiet the Noise

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." Philippians 4:6


Spend time everyday (even just five minutes) in a quiet room and just breathe. Inhaling and Exhaling. You will find the more often you do this exercise, the more relaxed you feel and will become mentally prepared for tasks ahead.

Focus on the Positives in your Life

Ignore the negatives. "Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” Philippians 4:8

Write it Down

Make a list every morning or night, of all the things that are positive in your life at the present moment. This exercise will help you focus on the positives and attract more positive things to your life.

Give Thanks

​Give thanks for the little things, for the little things are the big things, and the big things are simply little. "Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content" Philippians 4:11

Make a list of all the things you are thankful for at this present moment. An attitude of gratitude goes a long way.

And last, but certainly not least:


"Forgive us for doing wrong, as we forgive others." Matthew 6:12.

"For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you." Matthew 6:14

In life, we all experience hurt. Learning how to release that hurt is key.

Say "I release all negative emotions caused by hurt, and I chose to forgive those who have trespassed against me. I am happy to forgive, and I am happy that I am happy, Jesus."

Repeat as often as needed and watch your life and mental health improve.

Without a deeply rooted faith and knowledge in a Higher Power connected to our mental processes, we will continue to suffer the ills of poverty, rape, murder and injustice. The only way to change our society and the direction in which we are heading is to understand and value the importance and presence of a Greater POWER within us controlling our mental health.

Melissa Browne spent 14 years in the U.S. and upon returning to Trinidad, earned a BSc. in Psychology. She is currently pursuing her MSc. in Counseling Psychology as she is driven by the passion to eliminate prejudices and perceptions among women and children.​

In 2017, she founded her own company, Abyssinian Browne and Associates Consulting Agency. She also appeared on “The Leshana's Before and After Show" as the in-house Counsellor.​

In the near future, she will host “Formation,” a program geared toward creating entrepreneurship in Single Female Parents and supporting their dependents through workshops in Parenting, Time Management, Money Management, After School Home Work and an Extracurricular Activities Center. This is part of a joint effort to eliminate juvenile delinquency, teen pregnancies, STDs and HIV rates amongst our youth.
